About the event
Preserving the Peach
Free Summer Exhibit
June - August
Peaches have a sweet history in Gillespie County, cultivating a deep-rooted legacy of agricultural pride, family tradition and cultural celebration. Today, Fredericksburg and its surrounding communities are widely recognized as the peach capital of Texas, producing the most peaches in the state.
The arrival of German immigrants in the area in the mid-1840s brought these agrarian traditions. The settlers found the rocky, well-drained soil and temperate climate of the Hill Country favorable for growing fruit. While early farming families initially grew cotton and peanuts, it was not long before peaches were introduced.
By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, peaches were a common crop, and continue to be today. The area is home to more than 12 orchards and roadside stands, selling fruit and other produce from May through August.
Now through August 2025, head to the Pioneer Museum to learn more about the area's top crop. The exhibit highlights tools used to harvest the fruit, items from previous Stonewall Peach JAMboree's and more!
